Translating Competency-based Veterinary Education (CBVE) into Residency Training

Competency-based veterinary education is an educational model currently being implemented in DVM programs worldwide. The CBVE model of education has three components: the framework, milestones, and entrustable professional activities. Milestones are defined, observable markers of an individual's ability along a developmental continuum for each CBVE competency. Currently, CBVE Milestones are a method of assessment for students in clinical training. In medical education, milestones are used as part of competency-based education in post-graduate training. The CBVE model may also be extended for application to advanced veterinary clinical trainees. In this session, an approach to development of post-graduate (ie, residency training) milestones for CBVE competencies will be explored. Illustrative examples will be provided. This session is targeted for clinicians engaged in residency training who are interested in advancing assessment of trainees by exploring innovative opportunities in clinical education.
