Presentation Description / Summary: Once a standard protocol after graduation, practice ownership is becoming a diminishing dream. Many factors contribute to this, such as increases in student debt, changing work ethics, increases in equipment and real estate costs, as well as competition from other practices and veterinary groups. If you have a desire to own your own practice, there's many aspects that should be taken into consideration to determine if practice ownership is a right fit for you. Once you've decided that practice ownership is in your wheelhouse, how can you select or build the best practice for you and for your community? How can you make sure you have the best support staff to help you achieve your and their dreams?

Learner Outcomes: 1. Is practice ownership right for you in terms of your skills, temperament, motivation, and support? 2. How can you find a practice that you would potentially like to own, and how can you base your decision off of demographics and the business plan? 3. How can you successfully build and maintain the ideal team for your practice?

Learning Objectives:

  • Upon completion, participants will realize that a variety of practice ownership and partnership opportunities still exist for veterinary specialists. We will cover the pros and cons of "owning" in today's veterinary business environment.
  • Upon completion, participants will understand that while ownership can be an option it is very important to spend a number of years working in a busy specialty practice and mastering your veterinary specialty before considering ownership options
  • Upon completion, participants will learn that ownership certainly is not for everyone. We will cover the steps to take to see if you are a good fit for running a business and ownership. Action steps that are required to make ownership a reality will be covered.
