Canine Chronic Enteropathies: Treatment Strategies and Emerging Concepts

Presentation Description / Summary: Over the last decade, chronic inflammatory enteropathies (CIE) in dogs have received great attention in clinical practice. The 2010 ACVIM Consensus Statement offered an important guideline for a more standardized approach to this condition in dogs. New concepts in the treatment of canine CIE and research into various treatment options have evolved during the last decade, which will be discussed in this review. New directions with the potential to expand the current spectrum of treatment options and therapeutic strategies tailored to the individual patient will also be presented.

Learner Outcomes: - Describe and apply current dietary strategies to address canine chronic enteropathies and protein-losing enteropathy (e.g., the concept of food-responsive enteropathy) - Critically appraise the therapeutic role of probiotics and prebiotics, synbiotics, and fecal microbiota transplantation in canine chronic enteropathies - Identify and review emerging concepts including the role of digital health (incl. artificial intelligence tools), an individualized medicine approach (e.g., biomarker panels, therapeutic strategies), and directions for future research (e.g., organoids for drug discovery, systemic disease complications) in canine chronic enteropathy
