The Effect of Educator Emotion and Mindset on Learning Efficacy

Presentation Description / Summary: Veterinary educators are highly motivated individuals and lifelong learners, continuously developing their teaching skills and practice. To maintain this trajectory, educators must remain open to learning through challenging experiences. Many veterinary professionals, however, receive no formal training in education. Where do new educators learn how to teach? Some training programs do exist which utilize evidenced based education. What emotions affect how we continue learning while teaching ? How do feelings such as imposter syndrome and self-doubt affect our openness to learning (closing it down or driving it), especially in such highly motivated individuals? This interactive session will explore the literature and evidence surrounding how faculty experience challenges in developing their professional selves, in addition to presenting preliminary research findings of a qualitative research project investigating self-doubt within veterinary educators.
