Repurposed Medicine in Oncology: New Approaches with Old Drugs

Presentation Description / Summary: Advances in computational biology suggest the utility of established non-cancer drugs in cancer medicine. Epidemiological evidence of decreased cancer incidence associated with chronic medications in people suggests the possibility of anti-cancer activity. Artificial intelligence programs identify the potential for use of existing medications based on molecular aspects of cancer cells and an understanding of drug conformation. In this session, we will review real world examples of this emerging science for both human and veterinary oncology.

Learning Objectives:

  • Upon completion, the participant will be able to access and evaluate scientific literature regarding the identification of non-oncology drugs that may have the potential to help in management of cancer cases.
  • Upon completion, the participant will be able to define the role of molecular cancer profiling and the identification of potential non-cancer targeted agents that may be useful in treating a given individual tumor.
  • Upon completion, the participant will understand the challenges of validating the use of non-cancer therapeutics in cancer patient cohorts.
