Presentation Description / Summary:

Many veterinarians shudder at the ‘S’ word.  The good news is that understanding and interpreting clinical statistics requires almost no math skills at all.  This session will take you through common clinical statistics found in the results section of a paper, where they come from, how to read them and how to understand them.  These skills allow readers to quickly parse results sections and may be helpful for residents designing data collection that is fit-for-purpose in their own research projects.




Learner Outcomes:


  • Most clinical outcome data consists of categorical data (yes/no) or time-to-event data (survival data).  Learn how to interpret odds ratios (OR) and hazard ratios (HR) as they relate to these outcomes.

  • Regression models are often used in analysing these outcomes.  Learn the basic ideas  motivating models and common pitfalls to look out for in both their use and interpretation

  • Understand that p values are fairly meaningless in veterinary research because of small sample sizes and how confidence intervals are much more useful

  • Learn what meta-analysis is and how it can increase our confidence in pooling results from multiple studies

Learning Objectives:

  • Upon completion, participants will be able to define categorical and time-to-event outcome data and will be able to interpret odds ratios and hazards ratios as they relate to these outcomes.
  • Upon completion, participants will understand the use of logistic regression and proportional hazards models in analysis of categorical and survival data, as well as the use and misuse of these models in clinical research.
  • Upon completion, participants will be able to describe statistical power and to understand why confidence intervals should be used in lieu of p values for both statistical analysis and appraisal of research results.
