Presentation Description / Summary: Disorders of sodium are common is small animal medicine, and treatment can be intimidating at first. Dysnatremia can impact the outcome for our patients, as can inappropriate treatment of sodium imbalance. Understanding the causes of sodium abnormalities and knowing the sodium concentrations of the commonly available fluids can help make treatment of these abnormalities less stressful. This lecture will discuss causes and appropriate fluid therapy plans for patients with dysnatremia.
Learning Objectives:
describe the normal mechanisms that regulate sodium and water balance
identify sodium disturbances and the list the potential causes
create safe fluid therapy plans for correction of these disturbances
