While advances have occurred in our ability to manage obstructive ureteroliths, there is still a great need for novel, minimally-invasive treatment options. This session will teach about the development and application of burst wave lithotripsy (BWL), a new ultrasound-based extracorporeal therapy for ureteroliths. Attendees will learn how this therapy differs from other forms of lithotripsy, such as shock wave, and its unique potential for use in cats. We will present the design and creation of a BWL system for cats and its performance fragmenting calcium stones in vitro. Attendees will learn about BWL outcomes in humans and marine mammals and about the launch of a clinical trial in cats.
