When and How to Screen for Secondary Causes of Hyperlipidemia: A case-based Approach (Planned by SCE)

This case-based session will teach how to perform a rigorous diagnostic evaluation of the canine patient with hyperlipidemia to rule out common secondary causes, such as hypothyroidism and hyperadrenocorticism. Attendees will learn the spectrum of presentations of secondary hyperlipidemia. They will also learn classic presentations for primary hyperlipidemia. The session will cover how presentation influences the diagnostic plan for the patient. Attendees will be able to describe the expected response of primary versus secondary hyperlipidemia to dietary or medical lipid-lowering therapy and what outcomes should make a clinician re-evaluate a patient for underlying secondary causes.

Learning Objectives:

  • Upon completion, participants will be able to describe the complexity of hyperlipidemia and its multifactorial causes.
  • Upon completion, participants will be able to generate a thorough diagnostic plan for the patient with hyperlipidemia to identify secondary causes.
  • Upon completion, participants will be able to recognize outcomes that demand that a patient be re-evaluated for secondary causes of hyperlipidemia.
