Dairy and Beef Calf Colostrum Management and Post-day 1 Use of Colostrum

Presentation Description / Summary: In this session, experts in the field of colostrum management in beef and dairy calves will present brief updates in relevant evolving research areas including assessment of colostrum quality, total transfer of passive immunity, transfer of specific immunity, and strategies to improve duration of passive protection, as well as the use of colostrum post-day 1 as prevention and treatment for infectious diseases of calves. Each presenter will be selected based on their unique contribution to and experience in the field of colostrum related research and therefore, be the most suitable to answer related questions the audience may have.

Learner Outcomes: 1. The attendees to this session will be able to learn about, discuss and implement current colostrum management strategies and guidelines to improve transfer of passive immunity and calf overall calf health. 2. Attendees to this session will be able to learn and explore additional benefits from colostrum supplementation of calves post-day 1 for the treatment and prevention of infectious disease (i.e. calf diarrhea). 2. The attendees to this session will be able to learn and implement strategies to improve transfer of specific immunity in calves.

Learning Objectives:

  • Upon completion, participants will be able to revise new standards for individual-calf and herd-level serum IgG levels considered ideal in colostrum manegement programs of modern dairy and beef operations.
  • Upon completion, participants will be able to recognize strategies to increase the transfer of passive immunity in dairy and beef calves.
  • Upon completion, participants will be able to recommend strategies to increase the transfer of passive immunity in dairy and beef calves as well as the use of colostrum post-day 1 of life as an aid in the reduction of calf morbidity and mortality.
