Gastrointestinal Dysmotility: A Human and Veterinary Perspective

This interactive session between a physician and veterinary gastroenterologist with expertise in motility disorders will review and compare gastrointestinal motility disorders in humans and dogs and cats, with an emphasis on pathogenesis, diagnostic approach, and dietary and pharmacological management strategies. Specific disorders that will be reviewed include esophageal achalasia, gastroparesis, intestinal dysmotility, and chronic constipation.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the regulation of gastrointestinal motility and define the consequences of gastrointestinal dysmotility
  • List the current methods for evaluating gastric emptying and intestinal transit time
  • Describe the dietary and pharmacological strategies for managing gastrointestinal dysmotility
