Dr. Brainard graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary in 2000. Following graduation, he pursued a rotating small animal internship at the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine before returning to Penn to complete concurrent residencies in Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia and Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care, becoming board certified in both in 2006. Following residency, Dr. Brainard joined the faculty of the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine, where he is currently the Edward H Gunst Professor of Small Animal Critical Care. Dr. Brainard is an associate editor of the Journal of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care. His research has focused on the analysis and characterization of coagulation and platelet function in dogs, cats, and horses. He has a particular interest in documentation of the effects of novel anticoagulant, procoagulant, and antiplatelet drugs, with an eye towards the practical application of research knowledge to benefit the critical care population.
