Dr Hezzell graduated from the University of Cambridge. After 10 years in mixed and small animal practice in the UK, Australia and New Zealand she undertook a rotating internship at the Royal Veterinary College followed by a PhD in the epidemiology of myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) at the same institution. She then undertook residency training at the University of Pennsylvania. She has been at the University of Bristol since 2016, where she is currently an Associate Professor in Veterinary Cardiology. Her current research focusses on the inheritance of MMVD and the influence of endothelial dysfunction and fibrosis on disease progression.
