Dr. Cowgill received his DVM degree from the University of California at Davis and completed internship and residency training at the University of Pennsylvania. He completed advanced training in nephrology at the Renal and Electrolyte Section of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and received a Ph.D in Comparative Medical Sciences. He is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Small Animal Internal Medicine).
Currently, Dr. Cowgill is a Professor in the Department of Medicine and Epidemiology of the UC-Davis School of Veterinary Medicine and is Associate Dean and Director of the University of California Veterinary Medical Center-San Diego.
Dr. Cowgill was an early pioneer in the application and development of hemodialysis and extracorporeal therapies for dogs and cats and currently directs the hemodialysis and blood purification programs at both UC Davis and the UC Veterinary Medical Center in San Diego.
