Hyperinsulinemia-associated Laminitis: Risk Factors, Diagnosis, and Management

Insulin dysregulation (ID) is the key feature of equine metabolic syndrome (EMS) and can coexist with pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID). ID appears to be the driving factor and strongest predictor of endocrinopathic laminitis, or now called hyperinsulinemia-associated laminitis (HAL). Prevention of HAL depends on the ability to diagnose and control ID. For this session, five internationally recognized endocrinology experts (3-hour session, 20 min talks each speaker with a 35 min Q & A session at the end) will provide a multifaceted review of monitoring and assessing body morphometrics, the pathophysiology of ID and therapeutic targets, diagnostic testing, and how to manage and feed horses at different stages of HAL.

Learning Objectives:

  • Upon completion, participants will be able to identify body morphometrics associated with equine metabolic syndrome (EMS) and hyperinsulinemia-associated laminitis (HAL) and understand ways to monitor.
  • Upon completion, participants will gain a better understanding of the pathophysiology of insulin dysregulation (ID) and recognize important considerations when diagnosing ID.
  • Upon completion, participants will understand how to treat and manage horses at different stages of HAL, and gain knowledge on how to incorporate dietary management practices to reduce the risk of HAL in ID horses.
