Presentation Description / Summary: Adequate pain management remains a critical but challenging component of small animal veterinary medicine. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are a mainstay of pain relief, but are not appropriate for many patients seen by internists. This session will focus on current evidence regarding the effectiveness of commonly used pain medications including opioids, gabapentin, acetaminophen, and cannabidiol. Recommendations will be provided for acute and chronic pain management in dogs and cats.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe pain perception pathways and the associated potential therapeutic targets.
  • Understand the evidence base supporting the use of commonly prescribed medications such as gabapentin and amantadine intended to treat pain in animals.
  • Recognize new products in pain management such as Zorbium (buprenorphine transdermal solution) and Solensia (frunevetmab; felinized anti-nerve growth factor monoclonal antibody).
