Presentation Description / Summary: In this talk we will review some of the known psychological principles regarding food intake and feeding behavior and how these affect the feeding behavior and food preferences of cats and dogs as well as implications for their behavior in home and the veterinary clinic. Examples include social influence on food intake, perinatal flavor learning, novelty and conditioned flavor aversion and preference learning
Learner Outcomes: Better insights into how dietary experience affects pets' feeding behavior and how to advise clients and treat patients for management.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, participant will know more about the psychology of eating.
Upon completion, participant will be able to identify some of the common dietary experiences that affect feeding behavior in cats and dogs.
Upon completion, participant will be able to advise clients and treat patients for management of some of these dietary experiences and help prevent certain appetite issues from occurring.
