Presentation Description / Summary: Veterinary graduates leave academia with an expectation of having developed a wide range of skills across a large number of species groups. The ability to undertake these is difficult to determine without extensive assessment or compromising by sampling a small number of skills for assessment in simulated scenarios such as OSCEs or Cadaver surgeries. By necessity, these assessments have a narrow remit of what can be delivered for every student to ensure fairness. This session will describe the development of workplace based assessments and describe data about the assessment of a candidates awareness of their capability alongside a sampling of these skills. Data will be presented to document the utility of these tools and identify areas for future enhancement.
Learner Outcomes: Describe the limitations of traditional practical assessments Identify opportunities to enhance assessment in clinical workplaces Describe the challenges of workplace based assessment.
Learning Objectives:
Define measures of competencies and capabilties (skills) that can be used to assess veterinary graduates
Describe the limitations of simulated assessment in the assessment of practical competency
Define the benefits and application of workplace based assessment in graduate assessment
