Our presentation will compare and contrast cytologic and histologic parameters used in evaluating canine cutaneous mast cell tumors. We will discuss the pros and cons of proposed grading systems, the importance of standardizing criteria, using patient survival as the critical end-point in studies, and limitations of both modalities including sample quality and staining. Cytology grading can provide valuable clinical information that can impact staging, anesthetic planning and ultimately patient care.
