Presentation Description / Summary: Spinal cord injury is a common injury in small animal veterinary patients. Both the primary and secondary trauma to the cord that occur after an episode of intervertebral disk disease, embolism or external trauma have serious and lasting impacts on the patients they affect. Considering the pathophysiology of the inflammatory and neuroexcitatory injury that occur in the hours to days post-injury will allow for more specific medical interventions to aid in recovery and rehabilitation. An expanded understanding of neuroplasticity and how it applies to recovery from spinal cord injury will be featured.

Learner Outcomes:
1. Key components of primary and then secondary spinal cord injury after trauma, including vascular and neuroexcitatory injury 2. Neuroplasticity defined and how we might be able to manipulate neuroplasticity to our advantage
3. Glial scarring and how that can adversely impact recovery from spinal cord injury

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion, participants will be able to distinguish between the key components of primary and then secondary spinal cord injury, caused by intervertebral disk disease, vascular injury or external trauma, and specify steps of the secondary cascade of injury that might be available for therapeutic target.
Upon completion, participants will be able to define neuroplasticity and discuss with a client the importance of manipulating neuroplasticity post-injury to achieve good outcomes for patients with spinal cord injury.
Upon completion, participants will be able to recognize paitents affected by glial scarring, and learn how to minimize the change of glial scarring for patients affected by significant injury to the central nervous system.
