Presentation Description / Summary: This session will highlight recent advances in both: (1) the science of pain in cancer patients, and (2) clinical tools for detecting and managing pain in the oncology clinic.

Learner Outcomes: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to optimize pain management in veterinary cancer patients by understanding how to: (1) utilize existing tools to assess comfort and quality of life, (2) develop a first-line pain management strategy using currently available pharmacologic agents, and (3) revamp the first-line plan for long-term success. 

Learning Objectives:

  • Upon completion, participants will be able to utilize existing tools to assess comfort and quality of life in veterinary cancer patients.
  • Upon completion, participants will be able to leverage their knowledge of pain biology and pharmacology to develop a reasonable first-line analgesic strategy for dogs and cats with cancer.
  • Upon completion, participants will be able to develop strategies for reassessing patients and revising pain management plans to minimize suffering and maximize quality of survivorship in oncology patients.
