Clinical Management of Dysnatremias in Large Animals

Presentation Description / Summary: This 50 minute interactive course aims to review the significance of sodium within the body, and what happens in our large animal patients when they are depleted or in excess. We will go through case examples and work through the necessary calculations to safely and effectively treat hypo- and hypernatremias. The effects of too rapid of correction will also be discussed. We will additionally review other pertinent aspects of their clinical management, including intensiveness of monitoring and care.

Learning Outcomes: 1. Discuss the most common causes of sodium derangements in large animals 2. Understand the pathophysiology of dysnatremias and what happens when sodium is corrected too rapidly 3. Learn how to safely and effectively treat dysnatremias in our large animal patients
