Presentation Description / Summary: Non-invasive neurostimulation, such as repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), is a method of intervention that can modify brain activity. Neurostimulation can be used to induce neuroplasticity, examine the neurophysiology of brain circuits, and treat various neurological disorders. TMS has been established and FDA-appoved for the treatment of specific brain disorders in humans, including pharmaco-resistant depression and neuropathic pain associated with migraines. Application of the TMS in human and animal epilepsy as well as movement disorders has also shown promising results. Ongoing human and veterinary trials provide a new insight in the treatment of pharmaco-resistant epilepsy and emergency seizure disorders.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion, participant will be able to acquire knowledge on the possible mechanism of action of non-invasive neurostimulation, in particular transcranial magnetic stimulation, for treating neurological disorders.
Upon completion, participant will be able to explore the current and future applications of transcranial magnetic stimulation in humans and animals.
Upon completion, participant will be able to gain a new insight on the use of transcranial magnetic stimulation for the treatment of canine pharmaco-resistant epilepsy.
