Furosemide on Equine Pulmonary Veins

Presentation Description / Summary: To present recently acquired, novel data on the mechanism of action of furosemide in equine lung tissue. The action of furosemide in the lung is hitherto undescribed and the drug's efficacy in preventing equine induce pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH) is not understood. This project's results demonstrate the effect that furosemide has on pulmonary veins and how this may explain some of the drug's efficacy in exercising horses. The data also suggest that Thoroughbred horses versus control horses have different sensitivity levels to this drug. This data helps to elucidate the mechanism behind EIPH and how our current therapy helps to mitigate the effects of the condition.
