Diagnosis and Management of Portosystemic Shunts: An Interventionalist's Perspective

Presentation Description / Summary: This lecture will cover a variety of portosystemic shunt disorders in animals (congenital/acquired, single/multiple, extrahepatic/intrahepatic, venous/arteriovenous, etc.) with a focus on classification of these disorders, imaging differences, and updates on surgical and interventional approaches. New information regarding new treatment options and prognosis will be presented and discussed.

Learner Outcomes: 1) Learn the major differences between this different anomalies in terms of presentation, imaging, and treatment options 2) Learn the new treatment options for some of these disorders that are currently available and why they are preferred to what has been used historically

Learning Objectives:

  • Upon completion, participant will be able to understanding the different types of portal vascular anomalies encountered in veterinary patients.
  • Upon completion, participant will be able to undertsand the new interventional options to manage some of the complex problems.
  • Upon completion, participant will be able to have a better understanding of how a surgeon/interventionalist approaches these cases and why.
