Lecture 1: Dr Margaret Gruen Sensory Decline and Cognition in Dogs There is a growing volume of information on cognition and mobility age-related changes in dogs, but there is less information on sensory decline. This lecture will describe assessment and quantification of vision, hearing and olfaction in elderly companion dogs. The relationship between changes in these senses and cognition will be presented.
Lecture 2: Dr Natalia Zidan – The Relationship Between Changes Brain Morphology on MRI and Cognitive Changes in Dogs With age the brain undergoes neuronal loss and subsequent atrophy of both grey and white matter. In this session, these changes will be quantified using morphometry and diffusion tensor imaging in elderly companion dogs that have undergone cognitive testing.
Lecture 3: Dr Natasha Olby – The Microbiome and Aging in Dogs. This session will provide an overview of the relationship between the gut, oral and nasal microbiome and aging of the nervous system. Longitudinal data on the oral and gut microbiome in elderly companion dogs will be presented, compared with cognition and discussed.
