Newer Insights on Large Animal Neonatal Sepsis

Presentation Description / Summary: Foals and calves commonly present to referral hospitals for evaluation and treatment of critical disorders including sepsis. Critically ill foals frequently develop endocrine, hemodynamic, acid-base, fluid, electrolyte and plasma protein disturbances, which are associated with outcome. Similarly, calves have similar disorders, although endocrine information is scarce. Despite major advances in understanding the pathophysiology of sepsis in both calves and foals during the last decade, there are important gaps in knowledge regarding the diagnosis, therapy and prevention of sepsis. This interactive session aims to summarize the most recent studies and present preliminar results on foal and calf sepsis, challenge current dogmas and discuss major challenges faced by clinicians when treating these animals and therefore generate ideas for future collaborative research projects.
