Hyperammonemia in Cats

Presentation Description / Summary: Hyperammonemia is a metabolic condition characterized by increased levels of ammonia in the blood. Since ammonia is a neurotoxin, clinical signs associated with hyperammonemia typically involve the nervous system. This lecture will discuss the causes of hyperammonemia that have been reported in the cat. These include congenital portosystemic shunts, hepatic synthetic failure, nutritional deficiencies (vitamin B12, arginine), urea cycle abnormalities, infections with urease positive bacteria, post seizure  and renal azotemia. The presentation will include case examples and a discussion of the pathophysiology of ammonia toxicity and symptomatic and supportive therapy.

Learner Outcomes:
1. Understand how ammonia is generated and detoxified in the body
2. To be able to formulate a differential diagnosis for hyperammonemia in the cat
3. Given a case example of a cat with hyperammonemia be able to form a diagnostic and therapeutic plan
