Presentation Description / Summary: We will review strategies for the accurate and timely recognition of acutely decompensated congestive heart failure in dogs and cats. We will also review the current recommendations for the treatment and monitoring of acute congestive heart failure.

Learner Outcomes: 

Be knowledgeable of the typical clinical findings in the diagnosis of congestive heart failure in the dog and cat


Be knowledgeable about the cardiovascular actions, benefits and adverse effects of the important drugs used in the emergency treatment of heart failure, specifically, sedation drugs, positive inotropes (pimobendan, dobutamine), loop diuretics (furosemide and torasemide), vasodilators and anti-arrhythmics drugs.    


Be knowledgeable of some important monitoring strategies in the first few hours of managing a heart failure patient.
