Presentation Description / Summary: Molecular tools have revolutionized the ability to investigate microbial ecology, forever changing our understanding of host interactions with microbial flora. We are experiencing an explosion of novel discoveries about how health and disease in animals and people are shaped by microbial communities found in and on these hosts. This session will explore this new paradigm of host-microbiome interactions and the revolutions in our understanding of how microbial communities and host responses are influenced by a myriad of factors such as host genetics, diet, environmental exposures, microbial metabolites, etc. This talk will focus on research in food animals, extrapolating from findings in people and other animal species to expand and highlight important ideas. New hypotheses for disease pathogenesis of critically important diseases in livestock will be explored, such as mucosal barrier dysfunction and gut-lung axis interactions.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learner Outcomes: 1. Participants will explore research demonstrating that existing dogma regarding infections with individual pathogenic agents can limit our ability to understand and prevent disease. 2. Participants will discuss evidence supporting a new paradigm for understanding health and disease states in livestock and other species that integrates broader ecological connections between the host and their microbiome. 3. This understanding opens doors to novel investigative and therapeutic pathways regarding the most important conditions affecting health and well-being of cattle and other livestock species. 4. Participants will explore emerging theories for critically important diseases of livestock (e.g., respiratory disease, liver disease, GI disease) that arise from multisystem interactions with the microbiome. 5. Discussions will explore the potential for use of microbial taxa as markers of important health, disease, and production outcomes.
