Presentation Description / Summary: This state-of-the-art review will provide evidence-based recommendations for the diagnosis of invasive fungal infections (IFI). It will include the clinical findings that should lead to clinical suspicion of IFI, pathology (cyto- and histopathology), and non-invasive biomarkers (antibody, antigen, DNA). For each diagnostic option indications, limitations, and risks will be explored. Combinations of diagnostics options will also be discussed as appropriate.

Learner Outcomes: 1. Recognize common clinical findings that should raise suspicion of invasive fungal infection. 2. Identify common fungal pathogens in cytopathology samples. 3. Understand the indication and limitation of available biomarkers for common fungal pathogens.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe clinical findings that should raise suspicion of invasive fungal infection.
  • Identify common fungal pathogens based on cytology slide morphology.
  • Choose the ideal biomarker, or combination of biomarkers, including assay and sample-type for common fungal pathogens.
