Dog with Cough, Dyspnea, Murmur: Congestive Heart Failure or Not?

The diagnosis of congestive heart failure is not always straightforward. The diagnosis is a clinical diagnosis based assessing the signalment, history, physical exam, clinical signs and results of diagnostic tests and treatments. In this session, we will present a few cases of older dogs with respiratory symptoms and heart murmurs. You, the audience, will be challenged to make the diagnosis of heart failure or not.   

Learning Objectives:

  • Upon completion, the participant will be know that in dogs with suspect mitral valve disease, the murmur intensity generally correlates with severity of disease.
  • Upon completion, the participant will know several physical exam findings that generally refute the diagnosis of congestive heart failure in an older small breed dogs such as respiratory sinus arrhythmia or a low grade heart murmur.
  • Upon completion, the participant will be famililar the common findings in thoracic point-of-care ultrasound in the diagnosis of congestive heart failure in dogs with suspect heart failure.
